Popadelics and the Power of Shiitake Mushrooms: The New Vegan Superfood Snack
For Marilyn Yang, the CEO and Co-Founder of Fun-Gal Snacks, the parent company of Popadelics Crunchy Mushroom Chips, creating a new superfood snack inspired by her Asian culture and upbringing was a full-circle moment.
“Growing up, kids would make fun of me in school for bringing ‘ethnic’ foods to lunch. Now, I’m bringing my own twist on one to the market in a new and fresh way, with on-trend packaging that will look great in any lunchbox,” Yang said.
First cultivated in China between 1000 and 1100 A.D., the shiitake mushroom has long been revered for its culinary and reputed medicinal qualities. Shiitake mushrooms are low in calories while high in fiber and other important vitamins and minerals including vitamin D, vitamin B, magnesium, and selenium.
Popadelics Crunchy Mushroom Chips is on a mission to make shiitake mushroom chips mainstream and appeal to a broader audience than ever before, including both mushroom lovers and doubters alike. Bursting with flavor and packing an irresistible crunch, Popadelics makes it easier and tastier than ever for snackers to incorporate this vegan superfood into their diets. Popadelics is currently available in three culinary-inspired flavors (all vegan, gluten free, Non-GMO Project Verified, and OU kosher certified): Trippin’ Truffle Parm, Twisted Thai Chili, and Rad Rosemary & Salt.
The idea for Popadelics was conceived by Yang during COVID-19 quarantine in 2020, when she noticed the growing popularity of mushrooms as a superfood in supplements, culture, and more. In terms of snacks, however, mushrooms had yet to make a significant impact. “Most of the comparable options on the market, like kale chips, have been around for a long time. It was an opportunity to create something new, at least for U.S. consumers.”
While starting a business amid a global pandemic was not easy by any means, Yang and her husband and co-founder Mike Casali tapped into their finance backgrounds and quickly got the brand off the floor, debuting Popadelics Crunchy Mushroom Chips in April 2022. Popadelics has since grown to garner a loyal following and over 3000 retail locations nationwide and counting.
